Is Fresh Produce Safe? Understanding the Cyclosporiasis Outbreak (2026)

The recent surge in cyclosporiasis cases, a parasitic intestinal illness, has raised concerns about the safety of fresh produce. While the risk varies across the country, with California reporting only 41 cases this year, the situation in other states, particularly Michigan, is more alarming with over 3,000 cases and 44 hospitalizations. The outbreak has been linked to various types of fresh produce imported from Latin America, including lettuce, raspberries, cilantro, basil, snow peas, and mixed salad. This has led to a nationwide recall of lettuce, cilantro, onion, pico de gallo, and guacamole from Taco Bell restaurants in the Detroit area. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has received over 1,600 confirmed domestic cases and is aware of more than 5,100 cases requiring further analysis. The true number of cases is likely higher due to underreporting. Treatment includes an antibiotic called Bactrim, but the illness can cause serious diarrhea and dehydration, particularly among the elderly, young children, and those with compromised immune systems. It's not a good long-term weight-reduction strategy, and experts advise thorough washing of produce to reduce the risk of infection. While the outbreak is expected to conclude at the end of summer, it highlights the importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with fresh produce.
